NORTH AND SOUTH by Elizabeth Gaskell

North and South follows the story of the heroine’s movement from the tranquil but moribund ways of southern England to the vital but turbulent north. Elizabeth Gaskell’s skilful narrative uses an unusual love story to show how personal and public lives were woven together in a newly industrial society.

Comments: This is a great novel. It has some boring parts but the history is interesting. It is sad and romantic and disenchanting and interesting. Unfortunately, I hate the heroine because she is stupid but oddly her stupidity also fascinated me.( like: What would she do next that would screw everything up? ) And the lead male was not any better. The silly mis-communications and 'delicacies'/lack there of, of this time period seem ludicrous but, yet, also fascinating. Beyond that, this book was super clean.
