THE GOLDFINCH by Donna Tartt

Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don’t know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love–and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle.

Comments: I hated everything about this story. None of the characters were good. I felt like the author purposely took the worst people she'd met in her lifetime and made them a part of this poor kids life. I hated it. Everything good is bad and everything bad is good. And the main character is crazy. It had tons of swearing and descriptions of yuck and I got to the point where I just felt like I was wading through a trash can. So I didn't finish it and I'm glad. I went on to wiki to see if the painting had a point and got the short of the story. It only gets worse. So in the trash this one goes. How do books like this get published and more how are the heralded by critics? I will never understand it. (okay so credit here. this lady can for sure spin a tale. she has talent, her subject just sucks)
